The last few days were a peek into my writing and editing life. I'm putting that on the list of
topics I'll touch on again in the future. I don't feel qualified to
give writing advice to other people, but I can talk about what works
and doesn't work for me. I'll do that in the future, too.
The other day, I was talking to my
father about smoke detectors, and how I beat mine with a broom
handle.
The Conversation
Him: Why didn't you just disconnect the
smoke detector?
Me: I couldn't reach.
Him: ...
Me: It was telling me very loudly that
dinner was ready. I had to silence it!
Him: Forever?
Me: Yes.
I ran across this picture today while following the sparkly trail.
I guess if a smoke detector ever saved my life, I would be thankful, but I really hate ours! We have cathedral ceilings, and my husband is afraid of heights, and the batteries in ours seem to run out so quickly, so guess who gets to change them all the time?!
ReplyDeleteThere's a smoke detector in the hallway that is pretty sensitive. Otherwise, I might not have killed the one in the kitchen. Okay. I would have, but I'd have kept that information to myself!
DeleteI swear batteries don't last as long as they used to. They should last for a long time in a smoke detector that doesn't get much use. Well, unless you burn a lot of toast in your house.
LOL I love this conversation.. It sounds like something I would do!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one!
DeleteOh, how I've done that! I've seen it suggested that you pretend it is cheering you on as you cook, but my thought was "With what, a foghorn?" My last house had a super sensitive one that constantly cheered for us. This one hasn't gone off one and I keep poking it until it screams to make sure it is working.
ReplyDeleteOh like applause for a meal well-done? I'll have to give that a try. Well, I would if I hadn't already murdered my smoke detector.
DeleteIt's always a good idea to poke things around the house until they scream, just to be sure they're working of course. Kids, pets, husbands/wives. Make sure everyone is on their toes!
hahaha, yes they sure can be like torture if you can't reach them to change the battery out. Luckily, we have a handy ladder and ours are easy to switch out the battery, otherwise mine might suffer the dreaded broom handle too!!

It lasted for a while, but there's only so much a person can take of the wailing! I'm curious why they need batteries so often, too. They're up to no good. I'm sure of it.
DeleteHa! My hallway one goes on all the time. It's very sensitive. It likes to tell my family that I'm making bacon at 7:30am. When we lived in our other apartment, my husband would say, "mom's cooking again," because I was far from the good chef. I'm getting better. :)
ReplyDeleteThink of it like a timer, perhaps! When it starts to scream, it's time to set the table!
DeleteOh, that is too funny! When I was about 12-years-old, my dad was working in Northern California so it was just me, my mom, and my sister at home. We have a 2-story house with the smoke detector located on the high ceiling above the staircase (not over a landing, and not particularly close to the upstairs landing). The battery went bad in the detector. Oh, My, Gosh... it was awful. We lived behind closed doors and waited for the beep to venture out or attempt to run up and down the stairs before the next beep would blow your ears out. My mom was deathly afraid of heights, but eventually we could stand it no more. She got on a chair, leaned out over the open staircase, and beat the crap out of that smoke detector with a wooden spoon, until the cover fell off and the battery was knocked loose!!! Peace at last, peace at last, peace at last...
ReplyDeleteWe've laughed over that incident for years... thanks for the memories. :)

That is too funny. I can imagine the crack of the casing and pieces falling, because that's exactly what happened with mine.
DeleteI'm glad she didn't fall! That would have been a totally different story!
I say kill it! Does make me wonder if ours work....haven't gone off since we moved in last August. But I do remember those annoying beeps with dying batteries as a child.....made you want to be deaf for sure!
ReplyDeleteI almost want to throw a disclaimer on this post about having smoke detectors! We do need them, but boy, they can be super annoying.
DeleteHaha!! OMGoodness, we had to take ours down. We have a super small house and literally every time we cooked and something got the teeniest bit browned or burned it was going off. It still works off the wall and at least now we can hide it when we cook. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat's a good idea. I know that because smoke rises it should be up high, but on the ceiling makes it hard to turn off when it's on a hair trigger!
DeleteI'm really surprised my spouse (the family cook) hasn't killed our smoke alarm 100 times over. It's almost a tradition to have the alarm go off in the middle of cooking. As for our upstairs alarm, it once went off twice in a week, scaring the living **** out of us as we came out of deep sleeps - to find no problem. Yes, they save lives but they are so frustrating! ReplyDeleteThat's incredibly scary! If I didn't have an alarm wired directly into the electricity in the hallway, I might have bought a new one. They are super important!
