Round Up: Wish I Could Round Up This Word Count

Wouldn't that be nice? Round up your word count to the thousand or so. Instead of the 13,354 that I wrote, I could round that up to 15,000 or even 20,000.

Still, it's interesting to see this every week. I'll miss it when Camp NaNoWriMo is over. I was thinking that I'd been a total slacker this week, but I actually haven't. I had around 5,000 words last Friday, so this is a huge increase from the week before.

Let's talk about what I did this week to get that word count. I had to do some research, too. I feel like I'm flailing all over the place. Mystery is hard. I know I've said it before, but it's true! It might not be so hard if my main character, Casey, was a detective. I could fall back on police procedures. I'm trying to figure out how an ordinary girl solves a crime. She doesn't have access to all the great stuff that cops do.

She needs to do a background check. She's done a Google search and turned up nothing. Next step...yeah. I don't know either! I've been stuck on that part. I'm picturing a night time burglary into the local police station to use their software programs for searching. Is Lexis Nexis still a program police use? Her boyfriend is a cop, and her brother is a defense attorney. That's a lot of "law" around her. Somebody is about to give her access to some super magical program. Maybe she can dangle from a wire like Mission Impossible into the police station. (I'm only half-kidding about that part.)

This is the car she's driving. You better believe I spent two hours searching for the perfect car... for myself.

I developed her relationships with her family in the last two chapters. Walking through a little of the dynamic between Casey and her brothers. I expanded on Casey's personality and her job, too. Trying to get the details out there slowly without dragging it out unnecessarily or doing an information dump on the reader.

That's it this week!

What did you do this week? Anything fun that I can be completely jealous about? I'd love to hear about it.

  1. Um, I can't wait for this to come out! I'm impressed by your word count, even though you aren't. I have to believe there are more ways to find someone. I bet you could interview some PIs, right? Now I'm curious. Have you seen the "mini" that is a convertible pseudo-SUV? I need someone to explain the allure.

    1. I would absolutely love to interview a PI. My super secret dream job since I was a kid was to be Nancy Drew. Yeah. I'm a dork. I wonder how she got anything accomplished before Google.

I had to go look up mini convertible suv. That's a strange looking bug.
